Acne Scar Prevention Tips:
Avoiding Scarring & Dermatologist Skin Care Advice

The scars left behind by poorly treated acne can be unsightly, and can last a lifetime. Many people suffer from acne, with widely varying severity, during adolescence and even well into adulthood. Some say that having to deal with the bad scarring left behind by acne is worse than having wrinkles. Preventing the development of these scars by proper treatment of acne can help you have clearer skin in the long term, well after the acne has subsided.

How to Prevent of Acne Scars

If you’ve tried everything you can to prevent acne breakouts from occurring and are forced to deal with them, then there are things that you can do to help prevent the breakouts from becoming scars.
  • Never pop the pimples or cysts, and never squeeze whiteheads and blackheads. When you do this you can help the bacteria trapped within spread over your skin, and underneath your skin, causing infection. As the infection heals and scabs, scar tissue will develop.

  • Use a dermatologist recommended sunscreen at all times. When skin that is plagued by acne is exposed to the sun, the scar tissue will develop a deeper pigment and become more visible. Allow your skin to heal without becoming sunburned, or even tanned, as this will emphasize the presence of the scars.

Skin Care Tips for Treating Acne (Helps Prevent Scars)

While serious acne should be something that is treated by a doctor, there are things that you can do at home to minimize the breakouts. Reducing breakouts is one way to help prevent acne scars.

Wash your face twice daily with a dermatologist approved cleanser. The cleanser that you use should be noncomodegenic (non pore clogging) and hypoallergenic. Use warm water, not hot, to wash your face. After washing, pat dry without rubbing.

There are plenty of over the counter products that are intended to reduce acne breakouts. Most of these products include the ingredient Retin-A, a derivative of Vitamin A. The key to using these products is consistency. Always apply to clean skin, immediately after washing and drying your face, and be sure to use it every day for best results.

Use a good moisturizer, one that is specifically developed for your skin type. Many people think that using a moisturizer will increase the oils in the skin, but a good moisturizer will help your skin stay hydrated and healthy, without causing excessive oil development.

Use sunblock every day. Sun exposure can lead to more acne breakouts, and more damage when you do have breakouts. Acne does not go away fully when exposed to the sun. Not to mention the fact that sun exposure also can lead to skin cancer, so protecting your skin at all times, even on cloudy days, is very important.

Dermatologist Options for Acne Treatment & Reducing Scarring

If all else fails and you continue to have serious acne breakouts, you should consult the advice of a dermatologist for more intense treatment options. These doctors are specially trained to treat a variety of skin conditions.
  • A dermatologist may prescribe a prescription strength acne treatment that you would apply consistently and according to their instructions. Again, by reducing the acne breakouts, the scarring will be reduced.

  • If scarring is significant, there are prescription medications that can reduce the appearance and sometimes shrink the scars.

  • Dermatologists may offer bleaching creams to reduce the appearance of the scars.

  • In more serious cases of acne scarring, dermatologists may recommend laser treatment to lessen the visibility of the scarring.

  • Dermabrasion is a technique used to reduce acne scarring. Essentially, a machine is used to lightly sand the skin on the face, removing the top layers and helping to remove or minimize the scar tissue. This procedure can leave you with a clearer complexion and is often recommended in cases where scarring is severe.
Those who suffer from acne do not necessarily have to suffer with the unsightly scars left behind. There are options that can help your complexion be clearer, which will give you more confidence and more reasons to smile and show off your beauty!
