What to Wear to a Beach Wedding:
Appropriate Guest Clothing & What Styles to Avoid

With loads of engaged couples forgoing traditional church weddings, beach weddings are rising in popularity. Many of today’s brides don’t want fussy ceremonies, a heavy dress or rose petals tossed at their feet. Instead, they want naturally simple weddings that allow their guests to enjoy themselves in a comfortable and casual environment. While beach weddings are typically much more casual than a traditional wedding ceremony, if you’ve been invited to a beach wedding, you still may be wondering what you should wear.

Most people give very little thought to what they’ll wear to a wedding. Many women have their go-to Little Black Dress they look fantastic in, no matter what the occasion. However, since your normal “wedding outfit” won’t likely work for a beach wedding, chances are you’ll need to go on a small shopping spree.

But, don’t worry! There are many fashion friendly beach wedding clothing options for you to choose from. Use these tips to help you select the proper clothes for your upcoming event.

Consider a Tropical Inspired Dress or Outfit

When buying an outfit for the destination beach wedding you’ve been invited to, be sure to go into the shopping experience with a focus on tropical weather. Think about what you’d take with you on vacation for a dinner luau or date night. Chances are it will be very warm on the sand during the wedding, so be sure you pick weather appropriate attire you won’t get overheated in. Avoid choosing a pant suit or a dress made from heavy materials. Instead of a heavy suit or bulky dress, consider choosing a maxi style strapless dress with sandals or a long flowing skirt with a light weight blouse. Tuck a flower behind your ear for even more tropical style!

Great Clothing Colors For Beach Wedding Attire

When it comes to choosing an outfit color, drift your mind to the colors of the ocean or the colors of tropical flowers. Bright pinks, reds, yellows and greens are excellent choices for a tropical travel beach wedding. However, blues, sea greens and ocean-theme pastels are also great choices. Ladies with dark hair and tan skin often look great in the pastels, where ladies with light hair can easily pull of pinks or bright blues with ease. If you prefer prints, think about choosing big flowery prints and stay away from small prints, stripes or block colored prints, as they aren’t flattering on many body shapes.

Wedding Dress Code Etiquette Is Blurred For Beach Weddings

It’s a tradition that guests to a wedding never wear white, as the color is reserved for the bride. This stands true for beach weddings, as well. However, the remaining etiquette is fairly blurred with beach weddings. After all, beach weddings are some of the few nuptials where the wedding party and their guests can get away with going barefoot! That being said, use your common sense and be sure even if it’s the hottest season of the year, you’re not wearing something too casual or revealing. For example, a bathing suit with a cover up skirt would not be an appropriate wedding outfit, even for a beach wedding. Likewise, refrain from wearing cheaper foam flip flops but keep it cool by opting for flat sandals or wedges instead.

Remember, you want to be able to celebrate the couple’s marriage and not have to worry about your outfit being too heavy and hot. So, choose a dress made of lightweight material, opt for sandals and don’t forget to apply sunscreen!
